Flatirons Solutions Selected to Provide Data Management Services for the Automated Flight Service Station System

May 1, 2005

New system will consolidate legacy systems and streamline flight services

BOULDER, Colo. — Flatirons Solutions has been selected to provide data management services to Lockheed Martin in support of the Flight Service Station of the twenty first century (FS21) program for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Currently, flight service specialists at 61 flight service station facilities provide meteorological and aeronautical information to General Aviation pilots to facilitate safe and efficient use of the National Airspace System (NAS). Lockheed Martin's FS21 system will be a fully integrated nationwide network that gives all flight service specialists and pilots access to flight plan information from a single, common database, and will operate from 3 hubs.

Flatirons' five-year contract with Lockheed Martin is an integral part of the Automated Flight Service Station (AFSS) program. "We are privileged to be part of this initiative that will provide streamlined services to those in the aviation community who depend on this information while also providing significant savings to the FAA," stated Mary Pritchard, President of Flatirons Solutions. "The 10-year, $1.9B AFSS program is one of the FAA's priority modernization efforts and our data management role puts us at the heart of the effort."

As a part of Lockheed Martin's team, Flatirons Solutions will provide data management services that entail researching and analyzing data and data sources; developing data ingest and conversion software; establishing a data repository and database; and executing and maintaining the data management system that populates the AFSS system. Flatirons Solutions is responsible for delivering all of the aeronautical, meteorological, emergency contact, procedural, communications, and similar data from the current system, filling in any gaps, validating and verifying the information, and then providing it to the new FS21 system for dissemination to flight service specialists.

"It's a big job on a tight schedule; we look forward to the challenge ahead," said Pritchard.
