Flatirons Solutions provides data management services in support of the Automated Flight Service Station of the twenty-first century (FS21) program for the FAA. Prior to FS21, flight service specialists at 61 flight service station facilities provided meteorological and aeronautical information to General Aviation pilots to facilitate safe and efficient use of the National Airspace System (NAS). The FS21 system provides a fully integrated nationwide network that gives all flight service specialists and pilots access to flight plan information from a single, common database.
Flatirons was contracted to perform Data Management for the FS21 program to include:
Our data management services entail researching and analyzing data and data sources; developing data ingest and conversion software; establishing a data repository and database; and executing and maintaining the data management system that populates the FS21 system. Flatirons is responsible for delivering all of the aeronautical, meteorological, emergency contact, procedural, communications, and similar data from the current system, filling in any gaps, validating and verifying the information, and then providing it to the new FS21 system for dissemination to flight service specialists. We used .NET and C# technologies to generate a web-based front end that manages and controls access to the data. This front end allows the data administrator to ingest new or updated data, to run validation scripts against the data, and to generate reports of the data in XML and HTML. We also developed, deployed and maintain a secure, web-based content portal to facilitate communication and data exchange at each stage of the project lifecycle.
