Research and Development
Flatirons Solutions has a strong background in systems research and development. We have developed concepts and prototypes that address today's aviation system limitations, and our engineers are actively involved in defining the next generation air transportation operational environment, anticipated 20 years from now.
Our approach is based on close collaboration with both researchers and operational users. This establishes the critical bridge between research and the field – a link required for the successful deployment of today's complex, human-centered decision support tools. Flatirons staff have the depth of both research and operational experience necessary to bridge this gap. Research and development efforts include data analysis for research problem validation, complex algorithm analysis and development, system modeling, prototype design, development and evolution, and statistical analysis of post-implementation results.
Flatirons Solutions has assisted the government with technology-transfer efforts focused specifically on transitioning research products to operational tools. Specifically, Flatirons staff were instrumental in the development and deployment of the FAA Center TRACON Automation System Traffic Management Advisor (CTAS TMA) system based on our experience with the development and operational use of the National Aerospace and Space Administration (NASA) prototype CTAS systems. In addition, we have developed innovative mechanisms for smoothly merging the results of ongoing research into evolving operational baselines. This approach not only maximizes government ROI, but allows product enhancement to occur more rapidly than traditional methods. This departure from business as usual has been welcomed by the user community.
We are actively involved in the concept development of the FAA's System Wide Information Management (SWIM) net-centric operations effort and on the Joint Program and Development Office (JPDO) and Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). The JPDO is charted to transform the U.S. air transportation system by the year 2025, including such areas as Net-Centric Operations, Airports, and Security.
We continue our active role in R&D not only because the work is challenging and exciting, but because it gives us the vision to meet our current customer needs. Wiser decisions can be made in the present when you're part of shaping the future.
