Air Traffic Management

Flatirons Solutions is a leader in Air Traffic Management (ATM) applying expert systems engineering, software engineering, and program management experience to the development of mission-critical systems that ensure the safe and efficient operation of aircraft through the National Airspace System (NAS). We support key research and development programs for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA). Our leadership and vision spans the traffic flow management, en route, terminal, surface, and oceanic domains and allows our ATM clients to achieve quality systems development and deployment within schedule, budget, and technical performance constraints.

Leveraging our expertise in XML, software engineering, adaptation engineering, and aeronautical data, we developed VISAGE™ as a foundation for geospatial and aeronautical data viewing and analysis capabilities for the aviation community. We offer VISAGE™ under the Apache 2.0 Open Source license. VISAGE™ source code, batch files, configuration data, and user documentation are managed as an active open source project on SourceForge (http://www.sourceforge.net).

The following capabilities are provided to the open source community:

  • VISAGE ACES: Processes FAA Host ACES data from all 20 ARTCCs
  • VISAGE ERAM: Processes FAA ERAM XML adaptation data products
  • VISAGE DRAW: Processes a generic user defined XML input file into KML.

Flatirons established its reputation as an innovative ATM leader in the role it played in deploying the Traffic Flow Management (TFM) System, a strategic component of the National Airspace System chartered with maximizing efficient use of available airport and airspace capacity. The FAA noted that we were  “a consistent force in shaping the TFMS architecture, program processes and metrics, and future plans.”

The Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO), has developed an interagency framework in which several executive agencies of the U.S. Government, including the USDOT, are participating in developing the future aviation system, the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). Within the USDOT, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is leading the future aviation system activities. The Volpe Center is supporting the FAA to address the needs of future aviation system plans as well as for future plans in all other transportation modes. Flatirons Solutions, as a member of the SAIC team, will constitute an important part of Volpe Center’s resources, and will provide high-technology capabilities and skills targeted to the Volpe Center’s programmatic requirements in the areas of Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) and Traffic Management (TM) Systems in support of development of NextGen.
